The Challenge
A 1950s coastal Pacifica home with a tiny galley kitchen completely closed off from the dining and living areas. The family of four felt like the kitchen was a bottleneck — only one person could cook at a time, there was no counter space, and the cook was always isolated from the rest of the family.
Our Solution
We removed the load-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room, installing a flush LVL beam to keep the ceiling flat. The new layout opens completely into the living space while keeping a defined kitchen "zone" through cabinetry color and the backsplash. The butcher block counters were a personal request — warmer and more forgiving than stone, and they'll develop character over the next 10 years.
The Result
The kitchen now feels twice its actual size. The family reports they're cooking together for the first time, hosting friends more often, and the navy + butcher block combination has become a constant compliment from visitors.
We waited five years to do this remodel because we couldn't find a contractor we trusted. Maison was worth the wait. Honest, on time, and the final result is everything we hoped for.

Common Questions About This Project
How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Pacifica?
A full kitchen remodel in Pacifica typically costs between $50,000 and $100,000 depending on layout changes, cabinetry quality, and appliance package. This project came in at $58K–$72K including a load-bearing wall removal.
Can you remove a load-bearing wall in a kitchen remodel?
Yes. This project required a flush LVL beam engineered by a structural engineer to maintain the original ceiling line. Load-bearing wall removal typically adds $5K–$15K and 1–2 weeks to a kitchen remodel timeline.
Are butcher block countertops durable for daily use?
Yes, with proper sealing and maintenance. Solid maple butcher block counters are food-safe, warm to the touch, and develop character over time. They need to be oiled every 4–6 months for the first year, then annually.
